What is a domain name?
A domain name is the .com, .net, or .org address that you type in to go to almost any web site. For example, our domain name is RadioTower.Net. Generally, .com represents a commercial web site; .net represents a network or ISP (although this doesn't really apply much today); .org represents a non-profit organization. However, anyone can register any kind of domain.

Who can register a domain name? Who owns it?
Anyone can register and own an Internet domain name. Since the price of domain name registration and web site hosting is so low, many small businesses and individuals own their own domain name in order to look like a larger company. Also, many personal pages have their own domain name. When you register a domain name using our service, YOU own the name. Some registration services will charge you and then retain the rights to the name. We give you full rights and the registration is in your name. You can do whatever you'd like with it, whether or not it's with our company.

How much does it cost to register a domain name?
All well-known domain registration companies (like InterNIC and Network Solutions) charge $35/year to register your domain. Moreover, they require that you pay two years in advance! Not us. If you want to register for a year, register for a year. And we only charge you $20/year -- almost half price!

How do some companies offer "free" domain registration?
Easy: they don't. Look at the fine print. What they're doing is registering the domain for you at no charge, but you'll still get billed by Network Solutions for $70 ($35/year for two years). For example, some sites say "free domain reservation!" But, if you look at the small print, you'll notice "Our free services do not include the domain registration fee." If you register with us, you'll pay only $20/year -- not $35/year. And even more importantly, we don't try to trick you.

Does a domain name have to be renewed each year?
Using RadioTower.Net, you can register a domain name for as little as one year ($20 total) or up to ten years ($200 total). After that time period is up, you'll have the option to renew your name for up to ten years again at the same rate ($20/year). If you choose not to renew your name, it'll become available again for anyone else to register.

What is web hosting and why do I need it?
Registering your domain only gives you the right to use the name. In order to actually have a web site at your new address, you'll have to have it "hosted" from a server. Web site hosting is offered by thousands of companies around the world, including RadioTower.Net. (Click here to read about our hosting services.) Of course, if you register your domain name using RadioTower.Net, you can have any web site host it.

What can I do with my domain name?
You can do whatever you'd like with your domain name -- it's your's! You can set up a web site that can have an address of "www.yourname.com" and you can receive email at "anything@yourname.com". The biggest reason to have your own domain name is for marketing. Having your own www.ourcompany.com looks much more professional than http://www.ourisp.com/~ourcompany/main.html (for example).

Do I have to host with RadioTower.Net?
Of course not! The domain name is yours and you can do with it as you wish. If you already have a server, you can simply use our services as you would Network Solutions: simply for registering the domain. When you register, you'll have the option of entering the name servers you'd like to use (if you know them). Of course, we do offer a wide range of hosting services if you choose to host with us.
